  • Dropping in on Tom Shillue and his 12 albums in 12 months project: Lateral Thinking Puzzlers

Tom Shillue Lateral ThinkingComedian Tom Shillue began an interesting project on November 6, 2012. Instead of releasing one traditional comedy album, Shillue decided to release 12 albums in the next 12 months. This month’s release is his third and titled Lateral Thinking Puzzlers.

This ambitious project seems to be working out for Shillue. A regular around the NYC comedy scene, Shillue can be seen out most nights working on new stories and material. He always seems to be working on something and the ability to release material every month is a good way to get a lot of content out. It also helps these aren’t full albums, let’s call them EPs with each one around a topic.

Lateral Thinking Puzzlers’ first track, “Coining; Tenting,” introduces the theme of the album. Lateral thinking is the process of solving a problem through creative thought and approach. This first track kicks the album off perfectly with a good majority of audience participation. The set ends with quite a nice little surprise from the barbershop singing Shillue. Read More

    Review: Todd Barry “Super Crazy”

Todd Barry opens his new album, Super Crazy, in his signature monotone voice and right away the audience eats it up. He begins his set talking about all the different cities he’s visited and all the dumb things he has heard and seen people do. Todd is great at making fun of himself and his comedy career. He’s a comic comic and he is not afraid to point that out.

The audience and Todd have a great relationship. His fans really love him and seem to be thrilled when he starts talking to them through out his set. He has a way of sarcastically making fun of his audience that they can’t help but laugh at. When you put someone on the spot, the way Todd often does, it can’t help but make for an answer with little to no thought that Todd can easily make fun of. Read More

Aziz Ansari Talks Stand-Up, The President, and Chris Rock for SiriusXM Unmasked

Last night Aziz Ansari sat down with Ron Bennington at the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre for a Q&A session for SiriusXM’s Unmasked. It was a good hour long discussion about Aziz and his career with a few good stories which got a great response from the audience. There was a good chemistry between Ron and Aziz that kept the conversation flowing comfortably. Aziz talks about a lot of topics including his character Randy, his “relationship” with the President, and how stand-up never gets easier. Read More

    Review: Doug Benson “Smug Life”

First of all I want to say I love Doug Benson and his comedy. I think his podcast is as interesting and funny as WTF with Marc Maron or Wonderful, Thanks. Putting out a new hour of comedy every year is not an easy task but I think Doug has good material that just needs to be presented in a certain way – while he is high as balls.

Every 4/20 Doug records a new album to celebrate what most of his fans refer to as his birthday and every other pothead refers to as Christmas. This year Doug decided to do something a little different; he performed and recorded two shows of the same material one sober, or “uncooked,” and one stoned out of his mind, or “cooked” to see which performance came out funnier. Wainy Days LIVE: A Belated DVD Release Party

In honor of the recent release of My Damn Channel’s hit web series Wainy Days on DVD, the UCBeast hosted an evening filled with Wainy-themed entertainment. The show opened with David Wain singing along to the Wainy Days theme, accompanied by Fred Armisen on drums and Jon Spurney on keyboard. The night was full of comedy fun times, including interviews, mad libs, and tons of music – plenty of haha’s were had.

Wain interviewed two comedy greats, the first being musician/funny man Fred Armisen. They talked about their careers as drummers, choosing ideas for SNL or Portlandia, and Armisen’s instructional drumming DVD, which is full of lies. Later in the evening, comedienne Janeane Garofalo took the stage for a chitchat with David. They discussed her career, some truths about cats and dogs, and [Fake Spoiler Alert:] the death of her character in the Wet Hot American Summer sequel or prequel or does it really matter what it is because I’m going to see it no matter what?
