  • Review: Jo Koy “Lights Out”

Following his 2009 debut, Don’t Make Him Angry, comedian and frequent Chelsea Lately guest, Jo Koy is back with his extended and uncensored release, Lights Out, which dropped April 3rd via Comedy Central. Lights Out marks Koy’s second Comedy Central special. The comedian has also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with Carson Daly, BET’s Comic View and Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza.

Lights Out includes a one hour stand-up special, which Comedy Central filmed at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA, plus an additional 15 minutes of material not included in that broadcast. The bonus content is comprised of the first feature entitled, “All Access”, which contains backstage footage of his performance. The second, “DJ Josephine”, consists of Koy as a special guest on his mother’s AM radio show.

From the start of Lights Out, it becomes apparent as to what a day in the life of Koy revolves around, being a Filipino, grandson, son, and father. Typically staying within these topics, Koy immediately resonates with his audience on both an emotional and physical level. Yes, not every listener is of the Filipino ethnicity, but that comment was meant to emphasize the ethnic equality Koy indirectly promotes with Lights Out. Read the rest of this entry

Russell Brand Lands Late Night Talk Show Series On FX

It looks like Russell Brand will finally rid himself of the “Mr. Katy Perry” title thanks to FX. The British comedian has landed a show with the FX Network, where he will headline a series of six half-hour late-night comedy specials that will be filmed in front of a live audience. The unscripted and as of now untitled series will be produced by FX Productions along with Brand’s production company, Branded Films, and Dakota Films. While the details are still being finalized, the show will include Brand’s commentary about pop culture, politics and other current events. The Get Him To The Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall star will grace the FX stage in Spring 2012. Leaving out Arthur from his film repertoire was not unintentional; Brand should just forget that movie ever happened. I did.

“I am so excited I’m on the point of climax, in fact I will put the ‘O’ into FX, which spells Fox, which is actually the channel’s real name,” Brand said in a statement. “That’s the only thing that worries me about all this to be honest. At least I’ll be able to have a Christmas drink with Bill O’Reilly.” Brand will also be joining the FOX network as the voice of a character in an animated comedy that he co-created, which follows up on his voiceover work in the animated films, Hop and Despicable Me.

2012 looks like a promising year for Brand, but will his success be able to top that of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”? Unlikely, but maybe, Mr. Katy Perry, will earn the rights to a hyphenated name, Russell Brand-Perry. Congrats Russell.
