Last night, singer / occasional stand-up John Mayer joined comedian Dave Chappelle onstage at Columbus, Ohio’s Schottenstein Center to perform an unannounced tribute to Charlie Murphy.
One of Chappelle’s closest friends and a cast member on Chappelle’s Show, Murphy passed away earlier this week after a battle with leukemia. He was only 57 years old.
Mayer, who’s currently touring with Chappelle, was already onstage in the middle of his stand-up set, doing a few tunes and demonstrating his “white person dance,” when Chappelle started ruminating about his Comedy Central days (around the 3:30 mark), mentioning Murphy.
“Today, I got some terrible news. My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning, and everybody in comedy is heartbroken, so John, you are a sight for sore eyes.”
Then, he made a request: for Mayer to perform the song “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me,” which reminded him of his friend, the “habitually line-stepping” Murphy.
Enjoy the emotional clip, captured by an audience member (despite the fact that Chappelle specifically asks everyone not to).
