Well last night was the night we’ve been waiting for as Comedy Central set its sights on the one and only James Franco. The shows was a turning point for the network and it’s roasts for they managed to hook a whale. It wasn’t just the roast of another comedian, or a figure who embodies a caricature (Flavor Flav, Donald Trump, Charlie Sheen) this is an A-list Hollywood actor coming off an Oscar nomination. With said star came his friends, who happen to be other Hollywood stars. There was no need to find a random celeb that didn’t know the roastee, or fill the dais with comedians that could roast anything.
Franco has always been willing to do things outside of what most of his status would, whether that be making movies he wants, acting on a soap opera, or attending college just for the hell of it. He tends to collect experiences, so why not sit through a few hours of your friends ripping you apart on TV?
Host Seth Rogen brought his trademark stoner charm to the night that saw comedians Nick Kroll, Sarah Silverman, and Natasha Leggero deliver solid roast jokes. Jeff Ross was on his game as usual as the Roastmaster General. Bill Hader’s spot-on impression as the president of Hollywood. Andy Samberg pulling an anti-comedy set that was last seen by Norm McDonald on the Bob Saget Roast and just as effective. Jonah Hill delivered some very well written jokes while anxiously waiting to catch it himself, so much in fact that he followed every burn up with a, “Andy’s awesome.” or “I love Bill.” Just to remind people that he was indeed joking. It didn’t help much since Hill took a beating as did Aziz Ansari who recounted the night with one of the biggest burns on the whole dais that made more than its share of gay jokes aimed at Franco.
But enough talking, here were some of the best jokes from the highly viewed night.
