New Year’s box office: ‘Anchorman 2′ about to cross $100 million
When we last checked in on the box office, it was all the way back in 2013. Actually, it was only last week, and Anchorman 2 had made $56 million in eight days. That was well past the $50 million it cost to make, and on it’s way to the $85 million the original eked out in 2004. With a nice long holiday week and New Year’s Day in the rear view mirror, the further adventures of Ron Burgundy has now earned $95.5 million, and will cross $100 million by the time the weekend’s over. As of this past Monday, it had already $25 million overseas, for a total gross of $121 million. That’s a pretty impressive haul for only two weeks, regardless of the genre.
In addition, Ben Stiller‘s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty continues to do pretty well, having made $35.5 million so far. Further down the chart, Grudge Match (aka Grumpy Old Boxers) has made $18.4 million in it’s first week, which is kind of underwhelming for a movie with Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro (Kevin Hart co-stars). And if you’ve wanted to see Louis C.K. on the big screen, he’s in American Hustle, which has made about $73 million in three weeks. Tyler Perrys A Madea Christmas isn’t exactly setting the box office on fire, as it’s only made about $26.3 million, even though it probably didn’t cost as much to make.
Although the box office is pretty crowded right now, there’s not much opening, so expect the current slate of films to keep earning.
