The 2012 Golden Globes comedy nominations are a mess…
The Golden Globes nominations were announced and they are a friggin’ mess up in the comedy categories. First, for movies. Apparently all you need to be considered a comedy is be shot in a foreign location because other than Moonrise Kingdom everything was shot in an exotic location like France… or Philadelphia.
Awards shows like this never seem to truly acknowledge straight up comedy movies, rather they just nominate dramatic movies that happen to have funny moments.
Compared to movies, the television category does a better job with its selections actually being considered comedies but with that being said it offered up a few surprises or moments that make you go “hmmmm.” Let’s break it down.
BEST MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
LES MISERABLES
MOONRISE KINGDOM
SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
So there’s that. Help us Moonrise Kingdom, you’re our only hope.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Emily Blunt SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN
Judi Dench THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
Jennifer Lawrence SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
Maggie Smith QUARTET
Meryl Streep HOPE SPRINGS
And that happened…
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Jack Black BERNIE
Bradley Cooper SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
Hugh Jackman LES MISERABLES
Ewan McGregor SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN
Bill Murray HYDE PARK ON HUDSON
Good on ya Jack Black! You are definitely a dark horse in this category but it’s nice to see you you get the nod. We like Bill Murray for the win here but the movie he’s in isn’t getting critical reviews which a film like that needs since it’s probably not going to be a monster in the box office. BTW – critics love salmon fishing don’t they?
BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
THE BIG BANG THEORY
EPISODES
GIRLS
MODERN FAMILY
SMASH
I’ve mentioned this many times but Girls is just going to be one of those shows that gets nominated for everything. It’s something that people love to acclaim. Some really great and edgy calls coulda been for Louie, New Girl, Happy Endings, or Veep. However, they chose the well-worn path of TBBT and Modern Family.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Zooey Deshanel NEW GIRL
Julia Louis-Dreyfus VEEP
Lena Dunham GIRLS
Tina Fey 30 ROCK
Amy Poehler PARKS AND RECREATION
Really excited to see Zooey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus on this list for they’re both churning out incredibly great performances on their respective shows. This can be a fun category to watch because Fey and Poehler are co-hosting the night so you can bet your ass this fact will be worked into the evening.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Alec Baldwin 30 ROCK
Don Cheadle HOUSE OF LIES
Louis C.K. LOUIE
Matt LeBlanc EPISODES
Jim Parsons THE BIG BANG THEORY
Louis and Alec are our favorites in this category but it will probably go to Parsons. He’s the Niles Crane of a new generation.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Hayden Panettiere NASHVILLE
Archie Panjabi THE GOOD WIFE
Sarah Paulson GAME CHANGE
Maggie Smith DOWNTON ABBEY: SEASON 2
Sofia Vergara MODERN FAMILY
Only one comedy represented in this category so we’re backing Sofia.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Max Greenfield NEW GIRL
Ed Harris GAME CHANGE
Danny Huston MAGIC CITY
Mandy Patinkin HOMELAND
Eric Stonestreet MODERN FAMILY
Incredible that Max Greenfield received some recognition for the work he’s doing as Schmidt on New Girl. He’s a fav of ours but we’re thinking Stonestreet has this one.
Tune in Sunday, January 13th to watch it all play out. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are the hosts for the night so we’re expecting some great hosting.
