From July 11-13, Chicago will be hosting the 2014 Comedy Exposition, an independent comedy festival that will occupy a different Chicago neighborhood on each of its three days: Lakeview on July 11, Wicker Park on July 12, and Logan Square on July 13. This first-time festival has been organized by Chicago comics Katie McVay, Stephanie Hasz, Matt Byrne, Zach Peterson, and Goodrich Gevaar, all of whom have pooled their festival experiences to create the ultimate showcase for their home city.
Because this is the first year of the Comedy Exposition, a Kickstarter campaign was launched in April to fund the event and reached its $3,000 goal in less than 24 hours. Since then that amount has more than doubled to $7,000!
Matt Byrne told Laughspin, “We love Chicago, and with the addition of those higher profile acts, we’ll be able to bring more press attention and prestige to the fest. We want to really showcase the talent here in the city and submissions from around the country and fantastic headliners can help us do that.”
Each night of the three-night festival will showcase the best of both local headliners and surprises from national headliners as well. So far, the festival has booked a slew of renowned headlining acts, most recently Andy Kindler, who has appeared on HBO, Comedy Central, The Late Show with David Letterman, and as a voiceover in FOX’s Bob’s Burgers. Other headliners include Aparna Nancherla, Sean Patton, and Sean O’Connor, all of whom have made appearances on Conan and a variety of other programs on Comedy Central.
