At the end of a performance dubbed “epic AF” by Billboard at the Governors Ball festival in New York City, rapper Childish Gambino / comic actor Donald Glover made a surprising announcement about the future of his well-received musical side project.
Before he left the GovBall stage, Glover said the upcoming Gambino album will be the last.
Maybe this just means he’s done recording under that name? It’s hard to imagine Glover being done with music altogether — especially after such a successful year, with his single “Redbone” opening hit film Get Out and an incredible Tonight Show performance.
Glover, a writer and actor who appeared on 30 Rock and Community, released his first rap album in 2009; his first few albums, like I Am Not A Rapper, were sample-heavy, but he’s moved to his own material, with his last album — Awaken, My Love — boasting a wide array of musical influences.
