Hank Azaria is perfectly cast as an adorably dysfunctional sportscaster in new IFC comedy Brockmire.
The Simpsons voice and Emmy award-winning performer is a home run (SORRY) as aging Jim Brockmire, an accomplished — if perhaps a bit vintage – baseball announcer on the downslope of a major life crisis: when he catches his wife cheating, he gets supremely wasted, sabotaging his decades-long career and getting sent back to the minors.
Given the amount of radio-voice narration from Azaria in this trailer alone, we already can’t wait for the meta DVD commentary tracks.
Brockmire co-stars Amanda Peet, as Azaria’s new minor league boss; the series was created by Joel Church-Cooper (formerly a writer on Undateable and Ground Floor), and directed by Tim Kirkby (whose credits include Veep, Playing House, and the excellent Fleabag pilot).
Learn more about Jim Brockmire’s historic career in “Gamechangers: A Legend in the Booth,” the 2010 Funny or Die sketch that inspired the IFC series. It features some of Brockmire’s pals – Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen, and Joe Buck – recounting tales and running clips.
Brockmire premieres Wednesday, April 5th on IFC.
