Last night, tweets started to circulate announcing something we honestly never thought would happen again… Eddie Murphy returning to the stand-up stage. It’s something Murphy’s alluded to doing many times over the years, but to date has never actually come to fruition. Then last night at The Comedy Store, after more than 25 years, Murphy apparently took the stage in the Main Room, shocking the comedy world.
Word on the street is Arsenio Hall was also there to do some time and Tweeted his famous friend (which was later shared by The Comedy Store), Murphy then performed about 10 minutes of material. The staff at the venue were given strict instructions that absolutely not cell phones were to be seen anywhere in the audience. So photo and video evidence of this event is tough to come by at the moment, making this tough to confirm without someone in person witnessing it.
Here’s Hall’s tweet. A declaration? Or request of his comedian friend?

UPDATE: 1:38pm ET: The Comedy Store isn’t helping clear this news up, putting out its first tweet since Arsenio hit the stage moments ago and it helps fan the flames of interest rather than give clarity.
You never know who will pop in at The Store…

Update: 4:24pm ET: We have what appears to be more clarity on this story. We’re told Murphy did indeed return to the stage at the Comedy Store last night, just not as originally reported. Apparently Arsenio did come to the stage and performed. Hall then called Murphy to the stage, who received a standing ovation, said a brief hello and was off the stage. The entire moment was brief – if true, Eddie basically SNL40’d The Comedy Store. Is it a full return to stand-up? Nope. But we guess he’s getting closer to the stage right? Additionally, Arsenio has since deleted the Tweet in question, possibly at the request of his friend or out of the desire to no be sourced in further stories.
If anyone present at The Comedy Store last night actually witnessed Murphy on stage and can corroborate this story, drop us a line.
