  • Paul Brittain Departs Saturday Night Live

Featured player Paul Brittain is out at Saturday Night Live. News broke that “effective immediately” Brittain is leaving the show to pursue other projects. What projects those are is unclear at the moment as neither SNL or Brittain have yet to comment.

So after a little over a year, the show is down a featured player. Is this the beginning of Lorne Michaels upgrading some and cutting other feature? Maybe. With no one from the cast departing between last season and this one, this is the first lineup change on the show in a while so now it’s time to speculate if there will be any more or not.

But we can take pleasure in the fact that there will be no more Lord Wyndemere sketches in our future.

This is really disappointing. I thought Brittain was hysterical, but as last season progressed, it became obvious that he just wasn’t clicking with the show for some reason. What’s really surprising, though, is that this comes mid-season. I had a feeling he’d be cut this coming Summer, but something must be up with he got the cut mid-way through the season. Drama about to unfold?

SNL has cut people mid season before. Actually, I kinda expected other features to go first. Mainly Jay Pharaoh, he’s awesome at the impressions but it became pretty obvious quickly that they don’t seem to have any clue how to use him on the show.

It has happened, but very rarely (at least I thought so). And I totally agree that Pharaoh is the most likely to get axed. I think his talk show skit with Radcliffe, though highlighting how he’s best known for his impersonations, was also a test to see what more he could do. I would argue that though he didn’t fail, he didn’t succeed either. Truth be told, though, SNL’s biggest fault is not having him do Obama, especially since Armisen’s impersonation gets weaker and weaker over time.

Armisen’s Obama is passable at best.
