Primetime Emmy Nominations, a look at the comedy categories
This morning Jimmy Kimmel, (who really spiffed up for the event by not getting out of his pajamas) and Kerry Washington delivered the nominees of the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards. It was a great year for comedy with a lot of favorites getting noms with some new favorites also making some splashes. Oh yeah, and Louis C.K. killed it with 7 nominations.
Its also fantastic to see some of the great show companion webisodes get some recognition as well. Here’s the tale of the tape.
Outstanding Comedy Series
The Big Bang Theory
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Girls
Modern Family
30 Rock
Veep
Two new entries in this category with Veep and Girls. Both very worthy and ousting of The Office and Glee, both of which had ho-hum seasons. Parks & Recreation didn’t make it this year as it was bumped out by the returning Curb Your Enthusiasm. Also would’ve loved to see something edgy like Louie make it over The Big Bang Theory but it’s insane ratings help. The absence of Happy Endings or Community should surprise no one, but Louie being overlooked is pretty big.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series
Lena Dunham Girls
Melissa McCarthy Mike & Molly
Zooey Deschanel New Girl
Edie Falco Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler Parks And Recreation
Tina Fey 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Veep
Again some great new additions to this category with Louis-Dreyfus, Dunham, and Deschanel though this means Martha Plympton is out for her work in Raising Hope. And they got it right this time by not nominating Laura Linney (The Big C) in the comedy category.
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series
Jim Parsons The Big Bang Theory
Larry David Curb Your Enthusiasm
Don Cheadle House Of Lies
Louis C.K. Louie
Alec Baldwin 30 Rock
Jon Cryer Two And A Half Men
There’s always a weird nomination in this category and Cheadle’s nom in the who-cares House Of Lives takes that distinction this year. He’s a terrific actor but this feels like a nom for the sake of wanting movie stars to attend the award ceremony. It also snubbed Danny McBride in the brilliant Eastbound & Down or Charlie Day in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series
Mayim Bialik The Big Bang Theory
Kathryn Joosten Desperate Housewives
Julie Bowen Modern Family
Sofia Vergara Modern Family
Merritt Wever Nurse Jackie
Kristen Wiig Saturday Night Live
Could this be the hear Kristen Wiig takes the award for all her great work on SNL for 7 seasons?
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series
Ed O’Neill Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson Modern Family
Ty Burrell Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet Modern Family
Max Greenfield New Girl
Bill Hader Saturday Night Live
The solidarity of all the Modern Family cast to submit in supporting roles is great. But it doesn’t mean they all deserve the noms each and every year. It also continues the trend of criminally overlooking Nick Offerman in Parks & Recreation or Damon Wayans Jr. in Happy Endings.
Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series
Dot-Marie Jones Glee
Maya Rudolph Saturday Night Live
Melissa McCarthy Saturday Night Live
Elizabeth Banks 30 Rock
Margaret Cho 30 Rock
Kathy Bates Two And A Half Men
Great to see both Maya and Melissa here as their hosting roles on SNL were amongst the best of the season.
Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series
Michael J. Fox Curb Your Enthusiasm
Greg Kinnear Modern Family
Bobby Cannavale Nurse Jackie
Jimmy Fallon Saturday Night Live
Will Arnett 30 Rock
Jon Hamm 30 Rock
What I said about Maya and Melissa’s appearance on SNL above, holds true for Jimmy Fallon amongst this season of SNL male hosts.
Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series
Robert B. Weide Curb Your Enthusiasm “Palestinian Chicken”
Lena Dunham Girls “She Did”
Louis C.K. Louie “Duckling”
Jason Winer Modern Family “Virgin Territory”
Steven Levitan Modern Family “Baby On Board”
June Kasdan New Girl “Pilot”
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
Community “Remedial Chaos Theory”
Girls “Pilot”
Louie “Pregnant”
Parks And Recreation “The Debate”
Parks And Recreation “Win, Lose, Or Draw”
I’d really like to see Community win in this category but it should go to Louie and probably will go to Girls.
Outstanding Variety Series
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Real Time With Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live
Fallon won this last year and Conan got no love this time around allowing for Mahr to move in.

Other nominations of note. Well, it looks like Louis C.K.’s plan to air his Beacon Theatre special one time on FX to become eligible paid off for it netted him two nominations. Also, I completely forgot the excellent South Park documentary Six Days To Air was released this year. If you missed it, that’s one to watch.
