Sacha Baron Cohen To Play Freddie Mercury In New Biopic

by Matt on September 17, 2010

Talk about people seriously looking like each other. I think the last time an actor looked like the person they were portraying in a movie this much Patrick Stewart was playing Professor X.

Sacha Baron Cohen has just sealed the deal to play legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Production on the yet-to-be-named biopic is set to start filming in 2011.

A rights package has been set that includes the band’s tunes, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “You’re My Best Friend”. It is unclear whether Baron Cohen will sing—I’m told he can sing—or whether Mercury’s vocals will be used. Nobody sang like Mercury, so trying to replicate him would be a tall order. These decisions will be made as a director gets hired. [Deadline]

Baron Cohen his known for his funnyman antics but he’s currently starring in a Martin Scorsese drama Hugo. Who knows? Maybe we’re witnessing the transformation from a comedic actor into a dramatic one. Let’s just hope this heads more down the path of Tom Hanks than Jim Carrey.
