During his career, Stephen Colbert has conquered many forms of media but it appears he hasn’t been able to crack the literary nut, until now. Twice this week he sat down to talk with beloved children’s book author Maurice Sendak. It seemed like it was just Colbert’s chance to just mock another old person.
However what we got instead was a Maruice Sendak full of piss and vinegar, ready to take stabs at everything from terrible literature, censorship, to politics. At around the 3 minute mark of the first clip was the moment I realized I wanted Sendak to be my grandfather – an old man that not only can go with the joke but able to toss barbs back. Making things funnier as you’d expect kind old souls when you see someone in their 80′s. Sendak elevated Colbert’s run-of-the mill spoof interviews and gave us a look at what the character of Colbert might be like filtered through the mind of your grandpa.
