Television Upfronts 2012: FOX Comedies

FOX is continuing to support its Animation Domination Sunday nights because if it ain’t broke they why fix it, Amiright? The real problem for them is the ability to launch an animated show that’s not helmed by Seth McFarlane. As of right now, they have hope with Bob’s Burgers. The network scored in the live action comedy with New Girl and with the pickup of some new series could help give them a solid Tuesday comedy block to build off.
FOX had only a few new pickups in the comedy realm since they renewed a large portion of it’s returning series.
Renewals
American Dad – Perhaps the flagship of Sunday night since it’s become funnier than Family Guy.
The Cleveland Show – Was looking dicey for a while but got the renewal.
New Girl – Fox has a great show here that not only draws decent ratings but is buzzworthy and good at developing memorable characters.
Family Guy – Yay Peter.
Glee – But aren’t they all graduating?
Raising Hope – This is the quirky comedy that could.
The Simpsons – There might have been some early on hubub but there was too much money at stake on cancelling this one.
Cancelled
Allen Gregory – Probably for the better.
Breaking In – Second time was not a charm.
I Hate My Teenage Daughter – It’s better this way.
Napoleon Dynamite – This had hope, wished it saw another season.
On The Bubble/Unknown
Bob’s Burgers – Could go either way but hopes are high.
New Pickups
It’s Messy / The Mindy Project – Probably the most buzzed about new comedy out there which was created by The Office’s Mindy Kaling who is leaving Scranton, PA this season to focus on the executive producing and starring role in Messy as a Bridget Jones-style doctor. BJ Novak starred in the pilot and it appears that Fox plans on putting the show after New Girl potentially making Tuesday night.
Ben & Kate – Centers around a free spirit who, under the guise of being his niece’s nanny, moves in with his type “A,” tightly wound sister. The show originally eyed Abbey Elliot of SNL as the role of Kate but has since re-cast her.
The Goodwin Games – From the creators of How I Met Your Mother and about a dad who leaves his fortune to his three children only if they agree to his terms. The show will star Becki Newton (aka Barney’s stripper girlfriend Quinn from How I Met Your Mother) and Scott Foley.
