Is it a case of mistaken identity? Maybe. Is it the formula for comedy gold? Yes. It’s no secret that Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith could easily be related determined simply by looks. The two are completely aware of the situation and have played it up in the past. Do you remember their “Drum Off” on The Tonight Show two years ago? If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it below. Well, the two are “getting the band back together” for the Red Hot Benefit Comedy + Music Show & Quinceanera on April 29.
In a recent press release, Ferrell explained, “I have only one great regret in life and it’s that I never actually celebrated my quinceanera.” He then continued, “I’d like to think it was just a simple oversight by my mother, but there has been a void inside me for many years. Growing up on the mean streets of Irvine, California, I have vivid memories of all my friends celebrating their quinceanera. Well, on April 29 at the Shrine Auditorium, with Red Hot Chili Peppers and a bunch of other really talented comedians and musicians by my side, we are going to right that wrong, and everyone is invited.”
It also appears that they will be facing off once again on the drums. “So much goodwill came out of one silly joke. We’ve been trying to find another way to get together and do some more good for our respective causes and I think we have found it. I’m going to check with my own mother, because I don’t recall any family photos of my own quinceanera either.”
Without further ado, watch Jimmy Fallon officiate Ferrell and Smith as they face off in a surprise performance of “Don’t Fear the Reaper”:
