Secret Comedy Show Kills at CMJ Festival in New York!
Late Thursday night during the CMJ Marathon, hundreds of comedy fans made their way to the west side of the city, waited in line and then proceeded to pack into the Comix nightclub. All desiring to suspend the week-long barrage of indie music and be treated to night of jokes from some of the best comedians the Comedy Central Records roster has to offer. Their wishes were granted.
Shane Mauss hosted the evening, playing ringleader for the night as he made the often difficult task of warming up a crowd seem effortless, setting the mood for Big Jay Oakerson, who ranted about the pros and cons of body grooming. MC Mr. Napkins then got the crowd going with his sideways take on the hip-hop culture. Telling fabled awkward life stories set to a hip-hop flair.
Saturday Night Live writer and all-around nice guy, John Mulaney then took the stage and proceeded to show just how witty a man he actually is; making comedic material out of even the most improbable subject matter, including group murder statistics and wheelchair humor. Mulaney destroyed, and left Anthony Jeselnik with the difficult task of following up a seriously strong comedic set. Jeselnik soon proved more than capable, with his dry and very well paced delivery; allowing his jokes to slowly wash over the crowd. He waited to almost awkward lengths in order to get the laugh from an audience too eager to respond.
Joe DeRosa anchored the evening by telling almost neurotic stories about a love/hate affair he has trying to win the adoration of trendy hipsters; finishing the night with a painfully funny jag about his worst gig ever. Not to spoil the joke, but it involved a gathering in the woods of the Midwest, Insane Clown Posse, their Juggalo fans, a box van without seats, and the potential threat of man-rape.
Fellow comics Eugene Mirman, Judah Freelander, and Jeffrey Ross were among the crowd members on hand to share laughs. The riotous crowd was kept socially lubricated all night with drinks compliments of Brooklyn Lager, Hornitos Tequila and Sonu Water. At the end of the night the guests were given gift bags full of Comedy Central goodies, Layrite Pomade, and Raw Revolution snack bars before spilling out into the unseasonably warm night. Breaking into smaller groups, catching cabs, and headed in various directions; on their way to the next opportunity to see the next big rock band. Guaranteed nowhere near the level of laughter they just experienced from a well placed secret comedy show.
