Still hot off the trails from her big Oscar win earlier this year, we were very excited to see Brie Larson make her Saturday Night Live hosting debut. After all, before she gave an award winning performance playing a mother held hostage, Larson showed off her comedy chops in films like 21 Jump Street and Trainwreck. Unfortunately, though, even her charm and strong acting chops couldn’t save an otherwise disappointing episode. Some of the sketches had potential to be really great, and the evening started off strong with the return of a beloved alumni and delightful Mother Day’s themed monologue. However, the episode as a whole lacked anything truly spectacular, leaving us mostly un-enthused instead of laughing out loud. Here’s hoping Larson gets another shot at hosting, since she really did give it her all.
Cold Opening: Church Chat
The Church Lady returns! There’s something special about watching Dana Carvey’s beloved character call out Ted Cruz for his “superior face” and interact with Donald Trump’s family. Plus, it feels good to hear The Church Lady rip into Madonna’s bare ass… ah, just like old times.
Brie Larson starts off strong by reminding viewers that staring in The Room makes her the perfect person to host SNL the night before Mother’s Day. The true MVPs of the monologue, though, were the moms. We saw Davidson’s mom reveal that she’s still his ride home, witnessed Kate McKinnon’s mother deliver the ultimate mom joke, and discovered where Larson gets all her charm from [spoiler: it’s from her mom!]
