  • Bernie Sahlins, co-founder of Second City, passes away at 90

Bernie SahlinsIt’s sad to say, but  the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Bernard “Bernie” Sahlins has passed away at the age of 90.

Bernie was responsible for opening Toronto’s Second City, Chicago’s Off-Off Campus, and The International Theatre Festival of Chicago. Most notably however, Bernie was a co-founder of Second City Chicago, one of comedy’s most beloved theaters/institutions. Without Second City in Chi-Town, its possible we would have never been graced with the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Gilda Radner, or John Belushi, all of which were Second City Alumni. That little list of names doesn’t even hold a candle to the mass amount of comedy legends that have been produced and found there.

Thank you Bernie Sahlins for all the things you gave to comedy, especially Second City, which seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. You will be missed.
