The Laugh Guide: Issue 5 – Deadpan Comedy

A blank, expressionless face, especially a performer, who has or assumes a blank expression, impassively matter-of-fact, as in style, behavior, or expression.
The similarities between Mike Birbiglia, Demetri Martin, the late Mitch Hedberg, Bill Murray and the TV show The Office resides in the ability to tell jokes without having a change in facial expression or emotions. Deadpan comedy is not strictly a style of humor but more a tactic that can be used in short intervals or stretched across a comedians entire career. This strategy of joke telling doesn’t appeal to everybody yet if given the right comedic set up and relatable situation, Deadpan Comedy can make any adult cry with laughter. Valentine’s Day, hence forth known as V-Day for the rest of this post, can install many different feelings for many similar types of individuals. This hallmark holiday, we hope to share a little laugh with you no matter what situation you’re coming from.
It’s going to be another smashing time at the Sasquatch! Music Festival as the lineup was just announced. The crazy cool thing is that there will be some killer comics in this year’s lineup who will bring a fun sense of humor to the music jubilee. The festival will run from May 24-27 (Memorial Day Weekend) at the Gorge, which is the internationally acclaimed concert venue that was carved into the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA.
It seems ever since the show Shorties Watching Shorties, animation in comedy is growing into a creative outlet for stand-up comedians to express their stories and experiences. By no means is an animator replacing stand-up comedian, it’s more or less complimenting the roles through a different digital landscape.
Usually before I drift off into sleepytime land at night I catch Craig Ferguson’s cold open and monologue. He’s usually a great way to end the night with a final laugh at something silly. Last night during the cold open, which can be anything from a lip dub musical number, embarrassment of an audience member, or in this case last night, something totally random.

Mike Birbiglia’s movie Sleepwalk With Me is now in theaters, and if you haven’t gotten the chance to watch it yet, you should do yourself the favor and but the ticket.
