Some people flipping on the TV in the early afternoon might see a familiar face. Former late night host Craig Kilborn is going back on the air with a new half hour show that will be on FOX titled The Kilborn File. The former Late Late Show and The Daily Show host will be doing a variety late night-esq show featuring some current events jokes, celebrity interviews, and round table discussions.
Kilborn will be joined by former Step by Step child star Christine Lakin who will help out with interviewing duties and Kilborn’s popular 5 questions.
Frankly there is a lot going against this show. First off, it is put in the horrid time slot of anywhere between 6:30 and 7pm depending on media markets. This is a television dead zone that only game shows, syndicated sitcoms, and Access Hollywood knockoffs survive in, like angler fish in the depths of the ocean.
Kilborn’s people are saying they are hoping to bring in old fans to drum up support. This begs the question, does anyone know a Craig Kilborn fan? Sure he is a funny guy but his biggest talent seems to be being replaced by people who can do the job better.
He left The Daily Show eleven years ago, and his replacement (some guy named Jon Stewart) turned it from an average news parody show, into a Peabody winning juggernaut. His time on the Late Late Show wasn’t bad per say, but the shows real renaissance came after Kilborn left six years ago and Craig Ferguson really turned it into something special.
The problem is that after six years of absence from Craig Kilborn, America has moved on. The only anticipation I have for the show is that as soon as Kilborn leaves whoever takes over will probably be infinitely better.
