Last night at The Village Underground in New York City, comedian and actor Jim Norton sat down with Ron Bennington for a taping of SiriusXM’s Unmasked. The room was filled to the brim and the energy was hot.
During there one-hour-plus discussion, topics such as Opie & Anthony, Andrew Dice Clay, bad movie roles, and what’s happening with Norton’s animated series Chip Chipperson were brought up. Here are 5 things we learned at the Unmasked with Jim Norton taping:
Norton told the audience a fantastic story about how he and the other comics coming up in the local New York scene would hang outside the Boston Comedy Club and take each other to what they called, Hack Court. A comic would challenge another comic to defend one of their bits and if you didn’t win over your peers the bit would be dropped and you’d be called a hack. “It was a fantastic way to learn to write better bits and become a better comic,” Norton said.
Jim Norton may or may not re-sign with SiriusXM
Towards the end of the interview, Norton’s contract with SiriusXM – which ends in October – was brought up. Norton said that his agent has reached out but nothing at the moment has been offered. When asked if he wanted to re-sign if something was he stated he wasn’t sure. He made it clear that he really enjoys doing it, however, the last 2 or 3 months have been the busiest of his career between two episodes of a television pilot he’s made, his animated series Chip Chipperson, his current touring dates, and the fact that he’s getting ready to move. We can only hope it will work out in the end and he’ll be staying put.
Jim Norton and Jim Florentine do Dice live
Before Norton eventually ended up touring with Andrew Dice Clay, he and comedian Jim Florentine once went on stage deconstructing his bits live in front of him. This was at the request of Dice Clay himself after overhearing the comedians sarcastically breaking down his bits backstage at The Comedy Store.
Norton’s current relationship status with Anthony Cumia
Norton made it clear how difficult it was when the Opie & Anthony split occurred. He also talked about taking the brunt of negative energy after said event. “Hating the step-son” he called it. He also said that he never stopped communicating with Cumia after the split took place. This lead to a discussion about Cumia and his recent admittance into rehab for alcoholism.
Norton’s upcoming projects
We already know that Norton is currently on the Mouthful of Shame tour and will be until the end of May when it wraps up in Las Vegas, NV. However, he did enlighten us about a pilot he shot for IFC that eventually headed to AMC. The network ultimately decided to not go with the original idea, they did love Norton though and wanted to work with him. The show has now been reconfigured with Norton as host of a panel discussion breaking down one subject for 30min. The goal was to not fall into “another white-guy” talk show format. Two episodes have been shot with Norton describing one as a discussion about white privilege. “It’s a topic that’s hard to find the funny in, but I think we did a great job.”
All in all, it was another great episode of Unmasked hosted by Ron Bennington. Playback for this episode will take place Friday April 22nd at 2pm on Raw Dog with replays throught the weekend.
