Back in the 70’s and 80’s, if you heard that actor and television personality Charles Grodin was going to be on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson or Late Night with David Letterman, it became appointment viewing. You didn’t know what he was going to do, but rest assured, it was going to be nothing short of sheer entertainment. This lead to him being labeled as a quintessential late night talk show guest.
There was a playful combativeness to his appearances. It was as if he was playing the part of an “anti-talk show guest.” With Carson, he may question whether Carson actually likes his guests. In one memorable Letterman appearance, he brought his attorney out to do panel with him. It would even get to the point where viewers would question whether Grodin was authentic in his seemingly not-wanting-to-be-there attitude, or if it was all for show. That was part of the charm of it all, as well as Grodin himself.
Today, it was announced that Grodin has passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 86. In remembrance of Charles Grodin, we figured it’d be fitting to take a look back at some of these legendary appearances.
