ABC made a major renewal announcement today that affects just about all of the network’s comedy lineup leaving some on the bubble. Here’s the lowdown according to Variety:
The Goldbergs has been renewed for a fourth season. The 1980s-set family comedy, created by Adam F. Goldberg, is a staple of ABC’s strong Wednesday night comedy block, along with “The Middle,” “Modern Family” and “Black-ish.” In its third season, the show has drawn more viewers than in its initial run, with all episodes bringing in far more than 6 million viewers and a handful reaching over 7M.
Black-ish will return for a third season. The African-American family comedy, starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, has drawn a healthy audience in its sophomore season, but perhaps just as important as the ratings performance is the sitcom’s confrontation of hard-hitting headline issues such as police brutality and even use of the N-word. A recent episode, covering the Black Lives Matter movement, resulted in huge Twitter reaction and ratings uptick.
Fresh Off the Boat has also been renewed for a third season. One of many successful comedies on ABC’s slate, the comedy has been billed by critics and fans for bringing diversity to broadcast TV that otherwise had not boasted a sitcom centered around an Asian-American family. Created by Nahnatchka Khan, the critical darling has found a breakout star in Constance Wu who has been touted by many industryites since the series’ debut.
Modern Family will come back for season eight. The award-winning unconventional family comedy created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Nolan Gould, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Jeremy Maguire.
The Middle has also been renewed for season eight. Another strong, long-running family comedy for ABC, the series stars Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer. Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heiline created the series.
Still on the bubble:
The Muppets, Dr. Ken, Last Man Standing, and Galavant.
