Adult Swim teases upcoming “Smiling Friends” special

July 28, 2022      Mike Seigel      Television

Fans of the Adult Swim show Smiling Friends have something new to look forward to. On July 25th, the network released a “first look” of an upcoming special, titled The Smiling Friends Go to Brazil.

The show is one of the more successful animated comedies to come from Adult Swim since Rick and Morty. This can partially be credited to the online presence of its creators, Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack. Both have found success on websites Youtube and Newgrounds, so the show had a built-in fanbase before the pilot was even released.

The pilot dropped back in 2020 on April Fool’s day and surged in popularity almost immediately. Since then, the show has managed to maintain a cult following. While no release data has been announced, Adult Swim has confirmed that a second season is in the works.

But fans only need to wait a few weeks for the special, which is set to come out on August 7th on HBO Max. Show creators Hadel and Cusack will support the special with an appearance at the Adult Swim festival in Philadelphia. Perhaps there we will also get some insight on when we will see Smiling Friends again.
