While the Chris Rock / Will Smith slap sucked all the air out of the Oscars news from the weekend. There’s still more fallout from the moment Will Smith took it upon himself to attack Chris Rock on stage in front of millions.
It should be mentioned that the show had hosts for the first time in 3 years – it came with the trio of comedians Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes as well as actress Regina Hall. Today one of those hosts finally made a statement about the night. Amy Schumer rightfully came to the defense of her friend and fellow comedian Chris Rock stating that Rock handled it like a pro as he pushed forward to hand an Oscar to his friend Questlove for producing the documentary Summer of Soul.
Schumer released a statement on her Instagram account that took the opportunity to plug her new Hulu series, Life & Beth and tour (she is a comedian after all), but added that she’s “still triggered and traumatized” by the event.
I think we can all agree that the best way to unpack what happened is to stream my series Life & Beth and see me on tour this fall. But for real. Still triggered and traumatized. I love my friend Chris Rock and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend Questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing. So much pain in Will Smith anyway I’m still in shock and stunned and sad. I’m proud of myself and my co-hosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed.
So if we’re taking an unofficial poll of the comedy community it looks like we’re about 2,000+ comedians supporting Rock and 1 supporting Smith (ahem, Tiffany Haddish).
