Woah, well nearly 30 years after his death, comedy giant Andy Kaufman will release his first-ever comedy record this summer. The album, Andy and His Mother will be releases on July 16th via Drag City records. How do you ask someone who hasn’t been with us for that long put out an album? Well the album is a collection of unreleased material pulled from 82 hours of micro-cassette tapes Andy recorded over a two year period, 1977-1979.
The story goes that Kaufman loved the recorder and carried it everywhere to use at any given time. He was able to document jokes, pranks, put-ons and other tomfoolery pulled on friends, strangers and other people he encountered during this period of time. The tapes were then taken by the people at Drag City who turned to comedian/producer Vernon Chatman (Wonder Showzen, Mindsploitation) and Rodney Ascher to “come up with a concept for a single LP that would include several dozen excerpts.”
Then they turned to longtime friend and collaborator Bob Zmuda to write the liner notes and recruited Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader to narrate the album.
