Last night was the last episode of Saturday Night Live that will have Seth Meyers as the both the head writer and host of Weekend Update. As many of you should know by now, Meyers will be making the move to Late Night to replace Jimmy Fallon who is the new host of The Tonight Show.
Meyer’s leaving is bittersweet as he’s been a large voice on the show for over a decade and helped lead in a post 9/11 world and throughout the early oughts. But the writing was on the wall, much of Meyer’s peers have been departing the show over the last few seasons and as a testament to all of their talents, had solid post SNL careers. We’re sure Meyers will be included in those ranks once he starts his late night gig.
The reason SNL works so well is because of its ability to change its cast every so often. This allows for fresh ideas and new voices to emerge and stay current with the pop culture zeitgeist. In a few short years, new cast members like Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan, and Taran Killam have not only picked up on the flow of the show, and are now killing it. Meyers is leaving things in good hands.
After delivering his final joke on Weekend Update Meyers’ pals Bill Hader (as Stefon) and Amy Poehler dropped in on him to cross him over. Stefon got a bit catty with Cecily Strong as he was laying claim to his husband. They talked about what it’s like in the outside world and then their pal Andy Samberg even dropped in for a musical serenade. Then, just when we felt the tribute was finished, Fred Armisen drops back in for one of his update favorites and even brought back memories when Poehler left the show and Update.
Goodbye Seth, you’ve been in the Weekend Update chair for a long time, you will be missed.
