Adult Swim is hardcore in love with the business of Aaron McGruder and made their relationship public earlier today. The cable network inked a deal with the creator of The Boondocks and Black Jesus for a first-look overall deal.
Under the details of the deal, McGruder is producing a new live action pilot called Hooligan Squad. Which takes place in the near future and centers on an American insurgency in Japanese-occupied San Francisco. McGruder, who created the series, will executive produce along with Trailer Park Boys’ writer-director Mike Clattenburg as well as Aladjem and John Bravakis.
“With The Boondocks and the upcoming Black Jesus series, we consider Aaron very instrumental in the success of Adult Swim, and this deal is the continuation of a great partnership,” said Mike Lazzo, executive vp and creative director at Adult Swim. McGruder added, “It’s a rare thing to have a network home. Even more rare is a home that wants to see you grow and expand as a creator. Adult Swim is headed to new horizons, and I’m happy to be along for the ride.”
This comes on the heels of the 4th season of The Boondocks capping the series’ run a few weeks back. McGruder worked on the show for its first 3 seasons as its based of the source material of a comic strip he created while in college. Hooligan Squad doesn’t have a debut date but that’s just fine as McGruder’s new live action series, Black Jesus, which centers around a Jesus living in present day Compton, CA., is set to premiere this August.
