The hardcore podcast listeners were out in full supporting regalia this past weekend at the 3rd Annual NYC Podfest. The festival ran this weekend (January 9-11) at various venues across New York City. The Todd Barry Podcast, The Daily Show Podcast without Jon Stewart, and Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast! were some of the featured shows on hand at this year’s event. On Saturday night at the rock club Fontana’s in the lower east side, Comedian and Cabaret singer Bridget Everett, who’s Comedy Central Special airs later this year, entered Jackie Kashian’s Dork Forest for a live taping. The topic of dorkdom… Barry Manilow.
Everett, sporting a black hooded sweatshirt that read “MANILOW” across the front, professed her love of the man and would occasionally bust out into song. She also proceeded to tell an endearing story about meeting him backstage with her sister who then cut her out of the photo before placing it on Facebook. Kashian fired back with a Manilow story of her own via a Vegas trip with her ladies to see him in concert. Before they took to the Podfest stage that night, comedian and actor Matt Braunger (Up All Night, The Michael J. Fox Show) engaged a live audience with his podcast, Ding-Donger with Matt Braunger, for the first time. He told whimsical stories about his grandmother choosing his grandfather over all of their nine children if she could only have one or the other. Jeremy Wein, the festival co-founder, the crews, and also the venues brought yet another great fest this year and it’s only destined to grow with the popularity of live podcasting expanding and testing the new frontiers of the medium. If it is taping, they will come. Until next year.
