If you are a red blooded American male between the ages of 16 and 35 you probably know who Broken Lizard are. For those not in the know they are the geniuses behind movies like Super Troopers, Club Dread, and Beerfest. The beer-loving comedy group is celebrating the release of there first stand up comedy DVD Broken Lizard Stands Up. The Laugh Button got a chance to talk with Kevin Heffernan about the comedy special’s release on DVD as well as what is going on in the Broken Lizard camp.
What made you guys determine that now was the time to do a stand-up special? And how has the reaction to the special and DVD been so far?
We started as a stage sketch group and always planned to get back on stage. As we traveled around doing screenings last year for our new film, The Slammin’ Salmon, we opened with some live comedy and got the itch again. (The good kind of itch.) So as everyone’s schedules freed up we put together a 30 city tour and had a blast. When we ended in LA, we shot the show as a Comedy Central Special and DVD.
The reaction has been great. People tend to know us from our narrative films so this has been a cool way to mix it up. I think people appreciate that.
Out of the group, is there one person that stands out as the funniest? Or is that like picking a favorite child?
Definitely Kevin Heffernan…The other guys are good enough.
I’ve heard that the group has a notorious love of beer, is there a personal favorite brand?
Anything Raspberry flavored.
Do you go for quality or quantity?
When you’re drinking Raspberry beer, you gotta go for quality. Quantity will give you diarrhea.
When going out drinking as a group who usually gets stuck paying?
No one. We always drink and dash.
Did you make Beer Fest just so you could get hammered all day on set?
We actually tried to make Potfest first but we had problems focusing. Beerfest was our fallback.
I wanted to make a public plea on behalf of Super Troopers lovers everywhere. Can you guys rekindle the desire to grow the mustaches back?
I definitely have the desire, but my lip only has 12 hair holes, so desire only goes so far.
I did some research and looked at your individual Wikipedia pages. Some really random flags came up to me. I need some clarification answers since Wikipedia lies sometimes.
Was Erik [Stolhanske] really in a P90x workout video where he showed off his Prosthetic leg?
He was. But forget the leg, you should see his abs!
Did you really go to Law School?
These days they let anyone in.
Jay Chandrasekhar has a pretty good resume when it comes to directing. But a few TV shows he directed ended up being short lived. Can we start a rumor that there’s a “Jay Chandrasekhar Curse”?
The Curse only hits you if Jay kisses you on the lips…be warned.
On Broken Lizard Stands Up you discuss your love for Patrick Swayze. Are there any plans to honor him Broken Lizard style? Maybe a Dirty Dancing-meets-Outsiders-meets-Roadhouse-inspired film? You can reprise Club Dread’s “Lars” and use his massage moves to fight rowdy bar patrons at a summer resort in the Catskills.
As a matter of fact, in Super Troopers 2 Farva will fondle Mac as they make pottery.
You are about to kick off a tour. What can fans expect to see from Broken Lizard live?
We’re heading back out on the road with all new material. Some sketches, some stand up, some familiar characters from our films and lots of nudity.
How do you come up with ideas for your movies? What is the Broken Lizard writing process like?
We go around the table and each guy has to throw out an idea. If their idea sucks, they get hit tremendously hard in the balls.
It’s been speculated for a while that we will see sequels to Super Troopers (Super Troopers 2) and Beer Fest (Potfest) are these still just rumors at this point?
We are currently working on both. The Super Troopers 2 script is just about done. We’re hoping to shoot in 2011. A version of Potfest is also in the works, although it’s not really a sequel. We want to see if our stoned audience even notices.
There’s also an option for fans to vote for the next Broken Lizard project on your website. If the option of “A MOVIE WHERE THEY ARE ALL NAKED AND TAKE TURNS TAKING A SHIT ON A PAPER PLATE” wins would you really make it? If so, I’m starting an online campaign today.
Definitely. Our sole purpose is to please the fans and if that’s what they want…break out the paper plates.
We’d like to thank Kevin Heffernan for his time and remind you to pick up your copy of Broken Lizard Stands Up, which is out on DVD now.
