Someone’s definitely getting sued over this one!
It may seem like a lifetime ago now, but literally a month ago, Tiger King was all anyone could talk about. It was literally cluttering up our newsfeed, and everybody seemed to be doing a Tiger King parody of some sort. It was the perfect quarantine watch.
Just when you thought it was dying down, this absolutely and totally insane story happened. Arguably, the person other than Joe Exotic that everyone was talking about was Carole Baskin, who may or may not have fed her second husband Don Lewis to a tiger. She was the biggest “must have” interview of the moment, made even more so by the fact that she was turning down all interviews. She wanted nothing to do with the Netflix series once it came out.
Finally, Matthew with Invisible Object, who has been helping talk show hosts set up interviews during the pandemic, got in touch with Carole Baskin about wanting her for The Tonight Show. She still did not want to be interviewed, even after being assured the topic of Tiger King would not come up. But after her daughter convinced her that Jimmy Fallon’s audience was the best audience for her, she emailed them back to agree. She spoke to Jimmy last week for her big Tonight Show debut.
Except it wasn’t Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy Fallon has never spoken to Carole Baskin. Invisible Object doesn’t even exist. Instead, this is the handy work of Josh Pieters and Archie Manners. They reached out to Carole pretending to be working with Jimmy Fallon, spent weeks setting up a Zoom interview, used a soundboard to ask her questions, and explained that because of the way it was hooked up to broadcast, she wouldn’t be able to see Jimmy Fallon.
And we have a feeling if anyone is getting bothered over this one, it’s actually Jimmy Fallon and NBC. Because there’s no question that Fallon would’ve jumped at the chance to be the first interview with Carole Baskin. The ratings would’ve been massive. So they might not be so thrilled with how these two British YouTubers stepped in under false pretenses.
You know who did enjoy it shockingly? Baskin herself.
“I was suspicious as we were doing it because the questions appeared taped. But had no idea it would turn out to be such a fun prank,” Baskin told CNN in a statement. “It gave us a very welcome good laugh. I appreciate their cleverness and that they created their video in a way that I don’t feel was in any way mean spirited.”
Fallon and NBC haven’t commented yet. We look forward to seeing how they will take to this crazy story.
