Earlier this year, Chris Rock mentioned during an interview with Stephen Colbert that he was considered for (and didn’t get) roles on Seinfeld, Friends, and even playing Cockroach on The Cosby Show. And in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rock shared another role that he turned down.
During a round table discussion that also included Regé-Jean Page, Josh O’Connor, Jonathan Majors and John Boyega, when talking about his skepticism when offered a role on Fargo, he mentioned the surprising reason why he turned down multiple roles on The Sopranos throughout its run.
Rock explains, “Years ago, when I had my own show on HBO, it was at the height of The Sopranos, and I got a couple of offers to be on The Sopranos, and I was like, ‘I like it too much, I don’t want to spoil it.’”
With Fargo, it was initially the same thing, as he was such a fan of the show. Luckily, though, he did eventually take a meeting with the show’s creator, Noah Hawley. And that lead to what has been a critically lauded performance.
“But I was such a fan [of Fargo],” Rock continued “I took the meeting anyway, and then he presents me with this offer, and I’m like, ‘Whatever you want me to do, I’m down.’”
