The Laugh Button put on its skinny jeans and ironic sweater last week as one of the presenters of The Comedy Central Midnight Comedy Showcase at Comix Comedy Club in NYC. The showcase went down last Thursday night into Friday and was invite-only event that was hosted by Comedy Central and was part of CMJ’s annual CMJ’s Marathon (CMJ as in College Music Journal, not to be confused with Country Music Jamboree).
The lineup was pretty stacked with Amy Schumer, Hannibal Buress, Anthony Jeselnik, Big Jay Oakerson, and Reggie Watts. Julian McCullough was the MC for the night and also had to break the news that previously billed Joe DeRosa and Bo Burnham couldn’t attend because of scheduling issues.
Even with those two gone, the night’s comedians tore up the stage entertaining a packed house of comedy fans, music fans, and intolerable hipsters. As always Reggie Watts stole the show with his mix of jokes, songs, sound effects, and general ridiculousness. It was one of a handful of shows that Reggie was doing during CMJ, which he gave the phonetical abbreviation of “smidge”. We happened to see him at The Syndicate’s Conflict of Interest party and the show was completely different each time, with Reggie often coming up with bits relevant to things that just happened that night.
Reggie wasn’t the only comedian who killed, Anthony Jeselnik is really showing himself to be a hot comic to watch for future. His set was filled with some great off the cuff remarks and jokes that were equally as funny as they were offensive (and they were pretty damn funny).
Attendees were given gift bags with goodies from Comedy Central and The Onion; and no one went thirsty thanks to Lagunitas Brewing Co, Alma Tequila and IZZE. And lastly, Blue Microphones provided some of the gear for the evening.
Before the night kicked off, our buddy Sean McCarthy from The Comic’s Comic interviewed some of the comedians, so expect to see video from those interviews in the near future. In the meantime, we got some pictures.
