Mr. Colbert Goes To Washington

September 24, 2010      Ilya      News, Video

Taking a break from planning his rally on Washington, Stephen Colbert headed to capitol hill today to speak to the House Immigration Committee.

Right before he went in front of the Congressional panel Colbert tweeted “There’s no good emoticon for testifying before Congress. This’ll have to do: [8^($) The $ represents the value of the truth I’ll be spewing.”

While Colbert was in character for his speech, his knowledge on the subject is by no means a joke. Colbert participated in the “Take Our Jobs” program, which has volunteers spend a day doing the work of a migrant laborer. The program was launched by the president of the United Farm Workers Arturo Rodriguez, and while it is open to everyone Colbert is only one of seven people to do it.

As always Colbert delivered brilliant satire that was both thought provoking and hilarious. While it seemed some of the members of Congress didn’t find it funny (or didn’t get the joke), it’s clear members of the audience understood what was going on.

Colbert also might go in the record books as the first person to submit his Colonoscopy report as evidence into the congressional record.
