Last week, we shared the trailer for the new documentary about the making (and the turbulent drama behind the scenes) of The Ren & Stimpy Show. And now, to further ride that wave of 90’s nostalgia, Comedy Central has announced that they’re producing new episodes of the boundary-pushing cartoon.
For the new series, which initially aired on Nickelodeon from 1991-1995 (let’s forget about the SPIKE TV version…), they are bringing in an all new creative team to “reimagine the show for a new generation”. The series will be done, however, utilizing the Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group president Chris McCarthy said in a statement. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”
This news actually falls in line with some other recent announcements. The network, now under new management, has announced revival of Beavis and Butt-Head as well as a spin-off of Daria titled Jodie. It will be interesting to see how this nostalgia content will impact and help revive the network itself.
