If you had told me fifteen years ago that Julia Louis-Dreyfus would go on after Seinfeld to have the best career, I would have probably scoffed at you. As funny and capable of a comedienne Julia is, surely she would have to run par with her Seinfeld counterparts Jason Alexander and Michael Richards?
I tend to be wrong…a lot.
Pretty much the “Seinfeld Curse” has hit every member of that show except oddly Julia Louis Dreyfus. Not to disparage Ms. Louis-Dreyfus, it’s just let’s be honest… she’s not the one who we figured would go on to have a show that lasts five seasons (The New Adventure of Old Christine).
Likewise, the “AD Curse” is also something that is very real considering every member of that show hasn’t been able to spark a major network hit since that shows demise (except Michael Cera, but he clearly made a deal with the devil for indie cred).
Portia de Rossi almost had a chance with her performance on Better of Ted, though the show got abruptly canceled after two seasons. So even considering de Rossi’s 26 episodes on Ted, the next best try was from Will Arnett who’s debacle known as Running Wilde got cancelled after 13 episodes. Of the group of very talented actors, you can only really put an asterisk on Jessica Walter’s career since she’s gained traction in supporting roles like 90210 and the brilliant animated FX comedy Archer.
It’s still better than the non “Elaine” members of Seinfeld who’s combined shows didn’t break 15 episodes (5 for Bob Patterson and 9 for The Michael Richards Show), but not by much considering AD’s larger cast and the fact de Rossi is married to Ellen DeGeneres (which is the next best thing to dating Oprah).
This weekend HBO picked up the show Veep which could be a perfect intersection of these two feelings as it’s starring both Dreyfus and Tony Hale (Buster from AD). Things are now interesting since we get to see if maybe, these curses could just cancel each other and and give us a victory.
Personally, as much as I believe in Julia, I am still convinced Christine was just a fluke anyway. I’m putting my money that the show will doubtfully make it to 10 episodes. Give your predictions below… if you feel like it.
