Last month, it was reported that Amazon Prime had acquired up Coming 2 America from Paramount Studios. At the time, it was believed that the film would still be released in late December. But we now learn that won’t be the case.
The sequel to the hit 80’s comedy starring Eddie Murphy will instead be hitting the streaming platform on March 5th, 2021. The deal for the acquisition is said to have been in the area of $125 million dollars. Coming 2 America, which was directed by Craig Brewer, features an all-star cast (with many returning from the original) including Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Wesley Snipes, John Amos, Leslie Jones, James Earl Jones, Tracy Morgan, Shari Headley, and Louie Anderson, among many others.
“Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, in a statement. “Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite.”
“What could be better than a return to Zamunda? We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and Coming 2 America to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come,” added producer Kevin Misher.
While we definitely were looking forward to the film coming out next month, given the stiff competition that December usually brings for movies, it probably is for the best.
