Dana Carvey hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend. News that we might be a day late reporting on but you know that you love our SNL recaps the best and are willing to wait! Alright, let’s get into it shall we?
Carvey was on hand to promote his new….I don’t know. Can “nothing” be an answer these days? Regardless, Carvey was there and it was glorious. Let’s start with the cold opening. Recognize those guys? Of course you do. There was no way Dana was going to come back to SNL and NOT do some of his classic bits. It’s just a question of how many. I’m thinking two, I’m right, but I might have already seen the show. Mike Meyers howya doin’? Two for the price of one here.
Carvey’s monologue was one running gag about how everyone argues about which SNL cast was the best ever…oh LOOK! JON LOVITZ!
Another Carvey sketch we were treated to was the return of the Church Lady. It was slightly bumming to hear Phil Hartman’s recorded voice to the intro to both the Wayne’s World and this one but it was also fitting they didn’t change the intros. Church Lady was updated a bit bringing modern things for the conservative woman to mock like the Kardashian sisters, reality TV stars like Snooki (can Bobby Moynihan just do that character every week?), and BIEBER!! Carvey definitely tossed in some improv lines during this bit which was great to see. He sure as hell wasn’t rusty.
Of course we weren’t going to get away with a few bits where Carvey flexes some impression action and we got it in the form of the Celebrity Teen Crisis Hotline. The bit was okay and Jay Pharoah always is pretty great with the impressions, even if he sometimes flubs a line or two. The other bit heavy on the Dana Carvey impressions was a spoof of Regis Philbin but the sketch was just kinda meh.
The night’s musical guests were Linkin Park. A band I never really paid much attention to and their performance didn’t really do much to sway me. But I will say this…dudes love their black and white film and synths. Honestly, I’m still trying to shake the badness of Niki Minaj from last week so sitting this week out musically is just fine with me.
Weekend Update time! Jay Britian, nice James Franco impression. Kristen Wiig as a former disco queen turned meteorologist…I’m marking that one a miss.
I usually catch some SNL fatigue post Weekend Update as so must the producers, because that’s when the weaker bits end up. Case in point, a sleeper of a pageant bit and a clip with Bieber mocking the forthcoming Roommate movie, and an ending bit about an 80’s synth band that served as the only reminder that the was airing the night before the Super Bowl.
But I have to give it to Abbey Elliot for her Bad News commercial, it was quick, with a simple premise and garnered a few laughs.
To bring this all home. It was a very solid SNL episode that had a lot of great moments. Carvey made a great host, he wasn’t overbearing, but also didn’t disappear. The show was a solid mix of great resurrected bits with enough modern touches they didn’t feel dated. Side note: did you notice his teen boys Tom & Dex at the end of the show? They are like adults now. It doesn’t seem that long ago when Carvey told jokes about them as toddlers. I’ve had friends declare it was the best in a long time, which I guess means nostalgia goes a long way. But I propose a different reason…Bieber! That kid’s got some great hair!
