It was a meeting many in the comedy community wondered ever would happen. Dane Cook made an appearance on Louie last night. As many hoped, it addressed the joke stealing Cook was accused of about 5 years ago while his star was on the rise. From the first awkward trailer many wondered how the show would play out? Would punches be thrown? Would Cook get skewered since he was walking on C.K.’s turf?
What happened was actually a little bit of both, some redemption, and a backhanded statement from C.K. that he did, in fact think Cook stole his jokes. The entire episode is compelling and went down like this:
C.K. wanted to get Lady GaGa(?) tickets for his daughter and his only option was through Cook since they share the same promoter. C.K. ends up at Dane’s show where he discovers Jim Norton backstage being beautifully pervy. After some visual gags about security, the two comedians are in the same room.
We’re then treated to Dane airing grievances about the accusations basically stating that Louis soured what should’ve been a good time in Cook’s life; and though he didn’t accuse him of stealing the jokes himself, C.K. allowed things to be said through other comedians. C.K. basically said he doesn’t think Cook outright stole his material but perhaps Cook got caught up in the moment. Dane asked for an apology to the world via Youtube but rather got a bit more of a meta acknowledgement of the situation on Louis’ own show, it was a step up from a simple video if you ask us.
Overall, the episode was awesomely and awkwardly funny, fascinating, compelling, and provided an great dialogue about joke theft. It made both comedians look great and gave Cook a shot at redemption to those that might have written him off. I’m not sure how they pulled it off but it was way more real than anything the Jersey Shore premiere had to offer just down the TV dial.
And there was a terrific Bob Saget cameo. How could you lose?
