It was a simpler time in 2003. In the nascent days of social media, a comedian or artist could build up their following by interacting directly with their fans. Comedian Dane Cook was one of the first to realize this, significantly building up his online following to help promote his debut stand-up album, Harmful if Swallowed. Aside from Cook’s accessibility to his fans, the album itself connected in a big way, with Cook’s animated musings on car accidents, Monopoly, and the Kool-Aid man becoming instant comedy gold. The album ultimately wound up going platinum, selling over one million copies, an extremely impressive feat for a first album from anyone, let alone a comedian. In the decade since, Cook second album, Retaliation, went double platinum, he’s become an actor, and headlined the Garden (for his Vicious Circle HBO special).
To commemorate the album’s 10-year anniversary, Comedy Central is releasing a limited 1,000 copy run of Harmful If Swallowed of vinyl. The album will sport it’s own exclusive 10th Anniversary album artwork. The album will be available beginning on November 26th. You can pre-order it here.
