Dane Cook sang on the “American Idol” finale, it ended badly

May 27, 2010      Matt      Dane Cook, News, Television

Last night’s American Idol finale was a “who? what?” of entertainment fodder, and in the end America confirmed what we knew all along…teenage girls LOVE to text message.

There were a lot of unintentional comedic parts of the evening but let’s talk about the one that was actually planned. At one point in the show and without much warning, Dane Cook appeared on stage with a guitar in hand ready to strum a tribute song for departing Idol host Simon Cowell.

Wha? Dane Cook can sing!? Dane launched into his song parody “Simon Says,” stringing together a series of lyrical insults that Cowell made at Idol auditions over the years. Vocally not completely overwhelming, but he handled his own on a live singing show.

Then to wrap the song some of the most memorable rejects from the show joined Dane on stage for the big finish…

Things ended badly because someone, in their great producer wisdom, didn’t appear to think maybe one of said rejects/fame whores would want to try to grab another 15 seconds of the spotlight on live TV. One of them proceeded to grab the microphone from Cook and spout off nonsense, then another, until finally the camera zooms out and cuts to commercial, perhaps ending Dane Cook’s singing career?

Cook later took to his Twitter and said “If you missed it I got Kanye’d on American Idol. Wild. Luckily at the end of the song. Simon loved it. D-load song on iTunes tomorrow” and it was “not staged. Weirdo hijacked the song. Just glad he didn’t hit me in the face w/the mic or Americal Idol would b American Beatdown.”

You can download the full version of the “Simon Says” song here on iTunes.
