We know, we know, everyone has a podcast these days. Now really everyone does as Dave Chappelle announced a new podcast, The Midnight Miracle. The podcast will feature two co-hosts with Chappelle – Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def).
The show is described “salon style,” and “provides a glimpse into a very interesting season in the lives of the three hosts and their friends, and features guests from among the country’s most influential cultural icons.” Listeners can expect guests, sketches, songs, interviews and conversations.
A musical soundtrack is also planned for the show to feature music from Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, D’Angelo, Heatwave featuring Johnny Wilder and more. Luminary is hosting the show, as of right now there is only one season planned and all episodes were recorded during Chappelle’s annual Summer Camp in Ohio last year when everyone had to shelter-in-place from a tornado warning.
Luminary CEO Simon Sutton said in a statement, “The Midnight Miracle pushes the boundaries of podcasting, creating an audio experience listeners have never heard before.
Where the show becomes more than just a typical new podcast announcement is that Chappelle plans to press and release the podcast on vinyl to give it a bit of old school flare. In addition, the show is going to do something that hasn’t been done in nearly 25 years… release a new Black Star song. The podcast’s second episode, “Gladiator Circus World,” will debut a new untitled track. For those who know their hip-hop history, Black Star is the hugely influential group that Kweli and Bey formed in Brooklyn in the late 90s.
The second episode is only accessible via Luminary, the first episode “How to Inspire (Side A)” was put out for free on Youtube. As Kweli stated on Instagram, “We gonna do it like we on the streets, this first taste free, you gotta pay for the next one tho.” This news sparks new hope for a new album from Black Star as Kweli and Bey announced a new album, recorded it and then reportedly canceled the project last summer.
On the debut episode of the podcast the trio speaks with a selection of guests such as Chris Rock, Questlove, Jon Hamm, play audio clips featuring Robin Williams, Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh and music from Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Robert Glasper, The Roots and Stevie Wonder. That’s a lot to cover in 25 minutes.
