Dave Hill taking over Tom Scharpling’s ‘Best Show’ slot on WFMU

November 26, 2013      Bram Teitelman      News, Radio

Dave HillBeloved by indie rock fans and comedy nerds alike, The Best Show on WFMU has been a New York area mainstay on the Jersey City college station for the last 13 years. The show has gained an international following after becoming a podcast as of 2006, and many comedians have called in to participate. Tom Scharpling, who’s hosted the show since it started, announced recently that he’d be stepping down as host of the show as of December 17th. And while devotees of the show mourned, it’s been announced that the Tuesday night mainstay will be replaced by a show hosted by another comedian and podcaster Dave Hill. Hill has appeared as a guest on the show, and he emcees a live variety show at New York’s Upright Citizen’s Brigade.

Since starting in 2000, The Best Show on WFMU has charted it’s own course as a show. Part music show, part call in show and part talk show, the show blurred the lines between improv and actual talk radio. Many callers, particularly Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster, called in as fake characters , but celebrities and comedians called in as well. The Current says that Hill’s program doesn’t have a name yet, and WFMU’s station manager Ken Freedman says that he hopes that Hill will be able to hold on to a sizable chunk of The Best Show’s audience, adding that he was looking for a host that had been on the previous show.
