Any consistent watcher of Jimmy Kimmel Live knows that Kimmel’s been tossing out a Matt Damon joke for years. And now, after at least a decade and with Kimmel’s recent move to an earlier spot in late night, the time is finally night to have the actor on the show for real. Matt Damon has been booked as an official guest on Kimmel’s show next week.
For the unfamiliar, for years now and just before he signed off a show, Kimmel will sometimes announce, “My apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time,” acting as if Damon got bumped even though he was never scheduled to be on the show in the first place.
The story goes that that early on in the history of the show Kimmel was having a particularly bad night with bad guests, it was a low point for the host. Then as he was signing off that bad show Kimmel made the off-the-cuff statement and literally bent the producer over with laughter. It stuck and just became a thing.
Kimmel continued to make the joke for years and yes Damon showed up once as a “guest” at the end of one night to be interviewed but instead Kimmel ran through a lengthy intro and ended bumping Damon once again.
Then, most popularly back in 2008, Damon dropped in again to perform a duet with Kimmel’s then girlfriend Sarah Silverman for the video hit “I’m F#@king Matt Damon” so now it’s time for Kimmel’s crew to figure out how to top it all, for it’s been years in the making.
Kimmel’s rebuttal was just as great.
