On Sunday night, Byron Allen brought all of his famous comedy friends together for a night of comedy benefiting Feeding America. We’ve seen a bunch of these shows by now, and they always appear to be missing something. But months in, it seems as if they finally started to get things right.
The show had a bunch of highlights (Adam Sandler doing a new song, Russell Peters teaming up with Howie Mandel and Jeff Ross for a great bit), but above all else, Eddie Murphy knocked them all out of the park by debuting a new character.
In honor of the death of Little Richard, Murphy donned a wig and glasses and came up with Murray Murray. Murray is a soul icon that we’ve never heard of, but given all his stories and anecdotes, we’re sure he’s telling the truth. He shares stories about Little Richard, Ray Charles, and what he had done to Barry Gordon’s cat (he didn’t kill it personally).
It was definitely great to see Murphy getting back into the comedy groove, given how great he was in last year’s Dolemite Is My Name. Hopefully this is a sign that, once all this blows over, Eddie Murphy will have a new hour ready to test out in the clubs. We can’t wait!
Murray Murray, as well as the entire Feeding America Comedy Festival, can be found here. (Eddie Murphy’s segment starts at an hour 35).
