It’s official. The day we never thought would actually come. Eddie Murphy is returning to stand up.
There’s been speculation, and he himself even more or less confirmed it on a podcast last month. But now, in a new interview with the New York Times, it has been revealed that Eddie Murphy not only is returning to stand up, but that he’s been planning it for the past 3 years.
According to the interview, which also confirmed the speculation of a Netflix special, he’s even spent the last 3 years going around recording jokes and has about 20 minutes of new material. He plans on having 80 minutes by the end of the next 8 months, which gives us an idea of when the tour is set to debut. All of this new talk, of course, seems in conjunction with his new movie Dolemite is my Name.
“I didn’t want to just pop back up,” he told the Times. “I wanted a funny movie to remind them that they liked me. This movie turned out so strong that I figured this is a great way to come back.”
There is one aspect of Eddie Murphy that won’t be returning, however. “Nah, man, you can’t wear a leather suit at 58,” he told the Times.
Regardless, we are excited to finally see the master onstage again, doing what he certainly does best.
