Okay now this is something we can definitely get behind.
For those out of the loop, this has not been a good year for Ellen DeGeneres. The daytime talk show host (and her producers) have been met with criticism and allegations from former staff members, guests, and even audience members. The picture that’s been painted has been a stark contrast to her fun and upbeat image that she gives off. And now there are reports that she is looking to leave her show as soon as possible.
These reports have resulted in numerous names being tossed around about who would make a good host. At one point, there was a rumor that James Corden was in the running. Additionally, fans also started petitions and making it known who they would like to see host. And one of the most prominent dream scenarios seemed to be Eric Andre.
In the two days since a fan made petition was launched, it has over 75,000 signatures and growing every minute.
“With the recent scandals plaguing Ellen DeGeneres,” the petition reads, “we the people of the world hereby nominate and elect Eric Andre to become the new permanent host of The Ellen Show. Fans have been lining up outside of NBC Studios, Adult Swim, The White House, and for some reason my house too….all chanting: ‘Get Eric Andre to replace Ellen, keep show format the same. Also don’t change the name!!’”
For his part, Andre has given the petition his official approval by tweeting it out and also retweeting several articles/pleas for this to happen. It would not be unlike Andre to actually want to pursue something as bizarre as this as well, although clearly NBC would never go for it. (Or would they?) (No. They wouldn’t).

But that doesn’t stop us from imagining how f*cking amazing this would be. And to be honest, it isn’t totally an insane idea. While Ellen DeGeneres definitely has a show that is much more tamer and middle America skewing than what we imagine Andre’s would be, she never really fell into the norm of what a daytime talk show used to be, either. We envision Andre’s talk show would be closer to what David Letterman tried to do with his ill-fated morning show pre-Late Night. And we think it’s definitely time to see what absurdist humor would look like in the daytime again. Maybe Andre would have better luck in 2020 than Dave did in 1980!
