Eric Idle says “Monty Python’s Spamalot” movie isn’t happening

May 22, 2023      Andrew Buss      Movies, News

Bring out your dead! In this case, unfortunately we’re referring to the fact that the previously announced Monty Python’s Spamalot movie is officially not going to happen.

The movie was announced a few years ago, as an adaptation of Idle’s musical that was “lovingly ripped off from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Idle took the project on separately from the Python’s back when it premiered on Broadway in 2005, and wound up making everyone money in the process. The musical was met with much critical and fan acclaim, won a Tony Award, and helped introduce the Pythons to a brand new generation.

However, because of how things are set up within the Python’s, everyone needs to agree on the project. When the opportunity of the film came up, appearently it’s been ultimately vetoed by Idle’s fellow living Python’s – John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam.

Idle simply said on Twitter in regards to the film that “the Python’s killed it,” later adding that “the deals expired.” He did not elaborate on why the film adaptation was killed.

The Pythons killed it. I know. https://t.co/2jeBGYlgM8

I guess we’ll have to just wait for John Cleese and his forthcoming stage adaptation of Life of Brian. But according to Idle, he has nothing to do with that one.

Idle has said, “I have nothing at all to do with this production or adaptation,. Apparently Cleese has cut the song. Of course.”

The song refers to the song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. There will also be no crucifixion onstage. Not sure what they’ll do for a big ending, so we’ll just have to see.
