It’s been about a year since Will Forte exited Saturday Night Live after an eight season run as a cast member. Since then, he’s made the occasional guest appearance on TV shows and tried to make one of his SNL characters into a hit movie (to not much success), but nothing has broken him out as a “big name.” However, Forte just landed a role that, at the very least will put him amongst some big stars.
It was announced that Forte has joined the cast of Rock Of Ages, the movie adaptation of the musical that uses 80’s glam rock staples from bands like Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Journey, and more. Forte joins a cast that already includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, and Catherine Zeta-Jones (just to name a few). Apparently Forte will be playing Mitch Miley, the head anchor of a network news show (a character that was not in the stage musical).
On top of that, Forte is currently shooting I Hate You Dad with fellow SNL alumni/cast members Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. It’s unclear, though, as to what his role in the film entails. I Hate You Dad also features Susan Sarandon, Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, Vanilla Ice (yup, no joke), and comedian Colin Quinn among others.
Even though they may be minor characters, it’s great to see Forte land roles in such big features. We always loved him on SNL, and as we can see in his new Funny Or Die video, Forte hasn’t lost his edge. Let’s hope these films will lead to bigger roles for Forte in the future.
